Massive wildfires burning across France and Spain have forced the evacuation of more than 300,000 people, as emergency crews struggle to contain erratic blazes fueled by severe heat waves and shifting winds.
In France's Gironde region, home to the wine hub of Bordeaux, authorities issued overnight evacuation orders for five additional localities. The scale of the displacement has reached historic proportions, with regional officials noting that the evacuation of over 250,000 people from a single region ranks among the largest operations of its kind since World War II.
French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez stated on X on Sunday that "the situation remains very unfavorable" across the nation. He noted that "the fire again became extremely virulent again and unpredictable, generating its own winds and advancing erratically toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area," though he added that it "became calmer by the end of the night."
By Sunday morning, July 26, 2026, at 6:58 AM EDT, the Gironde prefecture estimated that the fire had consumed 162 square miles of pine forests and scrubland—an area seven times the size of Manhattan and four times the size of Paris. To combat the spread, ground crews and water-dropping aircraft are being supported by military reinforcements and resources, including helicopters and firefighters, sent by other European nations.
Meanwhile, Spain is facing its own crisis, with uncontrolled blazes forcing 116,000 people to flee their homes this week. Overnight, authorities evacuated additional villages west of Madrid, while a new wildfire front emerged near the coastal city of Valencia.
The regional president of Valencia, Juanfran Perez Llorca, expressed the gravity of the situation late Saturday, telling reporters that "the fire is beyond our capacity to extinguish." Pilar Bernabe, the central government delegate to Valencia, shared on X that "the night was very intense." She warned that "weather conditions are expected to deteriorate as the day progresses, so these hours are being used to battle the flames" as crews race against the clock.
