Elon Musk has announced plans to produce a full-length feature film adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek poem, The Odyssey, using his AI tool, Grok Imagine. The tech mogul stated that the project would be completed by the end of 2026, claiming it would be “historically accurate and true to the art of Homer.” To accompany his announcement, Musk shared a three-minute AI-generated short of The Odyssey that had previously been posted by an X user.
The announcement follows months of public criticism from Musk directed at director Christopher Nolan’s recent film adaptation of the same epic. Musk had previously characterized the production as a “go woke, go broke” failure, specifically attacking the casting of Lupita Nyong’o as Helen of Troy and making transphobic remarks regarding the casting of actor Elliot Page as Sinon. Musk also labeled Nolan an “anti-White racist” throughout his social media campaign against the film.
Despite this opposition, Nolan’s The Odyssey has become a significant critical and commercial success, ranking as one of the biggest box office hits of 2026 less than a week after its release. In response to the film’s success, Musk also proposed on X that he would be willing to provide Mel Gibson with $100 million to film a version of the poem that features “painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting,” with all dialogue delivered in Homeric Greek.
Critics have pointed out several flaws in Musk’s plan. First, as The Odyssey is a 2,800-year-old work of fiction featuring mythological figures like the Cyclops, sirens, and a witch, the concept of a “historically accurate” version is inherently contradictory. Furthermore, observers have noted that Musk’s efforts to generate outrage on X did not impact the public’s appreciation for Nolan’s work. Additionally, others have pointed out that Musk is late to the trend, as other AI-generated versions of the story have already been released to negative reception online.
Public reaction to the announcement on X has been largely unfavorable, with users mocking the project and referring to the billionaire with terms such as “cyclops truther.”
