Royals Join Veterans at Annual Festival of Remembrance

King Charles III led senior members of the Royal Family as they paid tribute to British service personnel at the annual Royal British Legion Festival of Remembrance. The event, held at London's Royal Albert Hall on the eve of Remembrance Sunday, brought together royals, bereaved families, and serving personnel to commemorate those who lost their lives in service. As the royals entered the concert hall, the audience stood to mark the occasion while a fanfare played.

The King, who became the patron of the Royal British Legion in 2024, was joined by Queen Camilla, the Prince of Wales, and the Princess of Wales. During the event, the Princess of Wales wore a handmade poppy, the Irish Guards regimental brooch, and earrings that once belonged to the late Queen Elizabeth II. The festival was hosted by Clive Myrie and featured performances by musicians including Alfie Boe and Mica Paris. The program also included appearances by the Chelsea Pensioners—retired British Army veterans—and several armed forces bands, such as the Band of the Royal Air Force Regiment.

The commemorative events continue on Sunday, when the King will lead the nation in two minutes of silence to remember those who died serving in the two world wars and other conflicts. He will be joined by other senior royals and political leaders at the annual National Service of Remembrance ceremony at the Cenotaph in central London, where they will lay wreaths. Additionally, some 10,000 veterans are expected to take part in the Royal British Legion's march-past, representing more than 300 different armed forces and civilian organizations. Remembrance Sunday is observed on the closest Sunday to Armistice Day on 11 November, the date marking the end of the First World War in 1918.

Veterans shouldn't sleep rough this Christmas, Burnham says

This year's festival marks the 35th anniversary of the end of the First Gulf War and 15 years since the conclusion of British military operations in Iraq under Operation Telic, with veterans sharing their personal stories and experiences of the conflicts.
