A British man currently facing charges of negligence in connection with the death of his 3-year-old son at a hotel in Cyprus has been granted permission by a local court to travel to the United Kingdom for the child's funeral. The 37-year-old defendant, whose case has drawn significant attention, is expected to join his family back home following the court's decision on Monday.
Alexandros Alexandrou, the lawyer representing the man, confirmed that the court has lifted all travel restrictions imposed on his client for a period of one month. This temporary measure is set to expire on Sept. 15, which is the deadline for the man to return to Cyprus to face the ongoing legal proceedings. Alexandrou warned that if his client fails to return by that date, authorities will issue a European arrest warrant against him. The court proceedings are scheduled to resume on Sept. 17.
The tragic incident occurred earlier this month in the southwestern resort town of Paphos, where the family was staying for a vacation. The young boy fell from a fourth-floor hotel window, though the specific circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear. Following the incident, the man was arrested and charged; however, he was initially released from detention under strict conditions, which included surrendering his passport, checking in weekly at a local police station, and posting a 20,000-euro ($23,015) bond.
The defendant's wife and their other son, aged 5, had already departed for the U.K. last week. Alexandrou, who recently took over the defense after the previous attorney withdrew from the case, noted that he requires additional time to review evidence that has not yet been provided by the prosecution.
