The 39-year-old actress first announced she had joined the website in March 2025. Although the platform is widely recognized for hosting explicit, sexual content, Cave has consistently clarified that she does not produce or post any pornography. According to an interview with The Observer in April, she has never appeared nude on the site, and her videos primarily consist of her brushing and showcasing her long hair.
Cave explained that she was initially unaware of the specific nature of her audience until after she began posting content. "It was only after I started that I realized that it's an actual, official fetish, and it's called 'trichophilia,' which is when somebody is aroused by hair," she told The Observer. "At its heart, it's about feeling like you're talking to somebody and having a little bit of a connection."
For Cave, a mother of four, the decision to join the platform was driven by economic necessity rather than a desire for sexual liberation or empowerment. She described OnlyFans as a vital financial lifeline, one that has proven to be more lucrative than her nearly two-decade career in the acting industry. "It's just a job, at the end of the day," she remarked to the outlet. In a post on Substack last year, Cave admitted to feeling a sense of shame regarding the transition, noting that she felt she had "nothing to show for 18 years of work in the arts industry."
The professional consequences of her choice have included tangible monetary losses. In September, Cave shared on Substack that she was barred from a "Harry Potter" fan convention due to her OnlyFans presence. She told The Observer that she previously relied on such fan events for steady income. According to her account, organizers explained the decision by stating it was a "family show" and that OnlyFans is "affiliated with porn." Cave expressed frustration at this reasoning, noting that many actors who participate in such conventions have appeared in films or television shows featuring nudity or sex scenes. "I'm just playing with my hair!" she wrote, per Collider and The Hollywood Reporter.
Jordan Pickell, a trauma and relationship therapist, suggests that the public reaction to Cave’s situation highlights a societal double standard. While parents taking on gig work is often viewed as a sign of hustle or resilience, work that touches on sexuality is frequently moralized. "Parents do gig work and that’s recognized as hustle or resilience, while anything resembling sex work is moralized," Pickell says. Meanwhile, Chris Belcher, an associate professor in the Department of Gender and Sexuality Studies at the University of Southern California, argues that the situation reflects broader societal failings. Belcher suggested that the focus should be on why it is difficult for a mother of four to support her family, rather than criticizing her for brushing her hair online. "I think it’s quite clear that we live in a society that devalues caretaking," Belcher says.
Currently, Cave balances her parenting responsibilities with her work on the platform, often filming her content in short, 22-minute windows whenever she has spare time or when her children are at school. She originally got the idea to join the platform from a friend after hitting a wall with her finances.
