Spotify Reports 777 Million Users Amid Slower Growth Forecast

Swedish streaming giant Spotify announced on Tuesday that it concluded the month of June with 777 million monthly active users. This figure represents an increase of 16 million users compared to the previous quarter, although it fell short of company forecasts by one million.

Despite the growth in its user base, the company cautioned that it expects expansion to decelerate in the third quarter, projecting approximately 11 million new net subscribers. This outlook negatively impacted investor sentiment, leading to a 2.6 percent decline in Spotify shares during opening trading on the New York Stock Exchange.

Financial results for the quarter showed strong momentum, with the group's operating profit rising by 61 percent compared to the same period last year, reaching 655 million euros, or $754 million. Revenue also climbed by 14 percent to 4.8 billion euros, meeting the group's expectations.

Reflecting on the performance, Alex Norström, the group's co-chief executive, described the business as healthy and compounding, noting the unique opportunities available to the company. He emphasized that Spotify's presence across daily activities—including commutes, workouts, gaming, and sleep—gives the firm a broad opportunity space. To maintain this momentum and attract new users, the company continues to refresh its offerings, such as the recent launch of "Personal Podcasts," which are short, AI-generated segments tailored to individual listeners. Furthermore, Spotify plans to grant its most dedicated paying subscribers early access to concert tickets before official sales commence.

"Spotify lives across your whole day – the commute, the workout, studying, gaming, the dinner table, and sleep. At our scale, that is rare… Our position gives us an opportunity space as wide as our users want it to be," he said.
