Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro, who relocated to the United States following his loss in the presidential runoff to incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, briefly asserted on social media that he is the "true president of Brazil." In an initial declaration posted to his X account, the conservative lawmaker alleged that widespread electoral fraud had taken place and expressed strong opposition to the official certification of the election results.
In the now-deleted post, Bolsonaro claimed, "I am the elected president, and the criminals who stole Brazil's election are part of a criminal organisation that has established a tyranny." He further stated his intention to "lead the opposition from here."
Shortly after the announcement was published, Bolsonaro removed the message from his social media channels. He subsequently altered the language of the statement, replacing the description of himself as "president-elect" with the title "leader of Brazil."
The political controversy surrounding the posts drew a response from United States President Donald Trump, who stated that he "won't get involved" in the matter. Although Trump had previously criticized the conduct of the Brazilian vote, he maintained that he did not take sides in the contest and made it clear that Washington would not intervene on behalf of the defeated candidate.
