Destructive Emerald Ash Borer Beetle Detected in European Union

A destructive, Asia-origin beetle that has decimated ash forests across North America has been identified within the European Union for the first time. As reported on July 17, 2026, at 7:57 AM EDT, officials in Hungary and Slovakia confirmed the detection of the invasive emerald ash borer this month, marking a significant concern for regional plant health.

In Slovakia, the Agricultural Central Control and Testing Institute in Bratislava reported that 18 emerald ash borers were discovered in the Streda nad Bodrogom district in the country's east. Meanwhile, Hungary's NEBIH food safety office announced that two adult beetles were captured in a trap located in the Beregsurany forest, situated near the Ukrainian border.

Describing the insect as one of the most serious threats to ash trees, the NEBIH office noted that the pest has already caused widespread tree mortality in both North America and Eastern Europe. The beetle, which can reach up to half an inch in length as an adult, has prompted Hungarian authorities to implement increased monitoring and additional traps to evaluate the scale of the infestation. The public has been urged by officials to report any trees exhibiting suspicious symptoms.

The impact of the emerald ash borer has been extensive in North America, where the U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that tens of millions of ash trees have been killed or damaged. Since its initial detection in southeast Michigan in 2002, the pest has spread to 38 states and the District of Columbia. The USDA characterizes the beetle as a strong flyer that is well-adapted to the climate and spreads naturally.

Various strategies have been employed in the United States to combat the infestation. In Minnesota, where the beetle was first spotted in 2009, authorities launched a program to release specific species of wasps that target the beetle during its life cycle without harming other species. Additionally, a 2025 study identified certain fungi in Minnesota capable of killing the invasive insects. The beetle continues to reach new territories, having been detected in Denver last summer and in North Dakota in 2024.

While many European nations maintain emergency protocols for such an introduction, Hungary is pushing for the issue to be prioritized at the next meeting of EU agriculture ministers. Hungarian Agriculture Minister Szabolcs Bona emphasized the gravity of the situation, stating that the government is taking every possible measure to prevent the beetle from becoming permanently established or evolving into a broader plant health crisis for the European Union.
