A self-identified left-wing activist group, the “Angry Birds Commando,” has claimed responsibility for a sabotage incident that disrupted railway operations in western Germany. In a message posted on the German website indymedia.org, the group stated that they placed incendiary devices along a track situated between the cities of Cologne and Düsseldorf.
The incident occurred on Friday morning, when fires were ignited at two separate locations between the city of Leverkusen and the town of Langenfeld. While firefighters were able to extinguish the flames, the railway infrastructure sustained damage, leading to significant service disruptions including cancellations and delays. Repair efforts were expected to continue through Saturday afternoon, though officials have not yet confirmed when normal train services will be fully restored.
In their online statement, the group justified the vandalism by citing opposition to industrial technology, claiming that “this movement will prevent the planet from being shredded.” Security sources cited by the German dpa news agency have indicated that they suspect the group’s claim of responsibility is genuine. Meanwhile, authorities in Cologne have initiated a formal investigation into the sabotage and are actively seeking information from potential witnesses.
This is not the first time the group has targeted rail infrastructure. The “Angry Birds Commando” has previously claimed responsibility for similar disruptive acts against Deutsche Bahn train lines, including an incident in 2025 between the cities of Düsseldorf and Duisdorf.
