Shipping traffic through the waterway has largely ceased due to the intensifying exchange of fire. Iranian state media reported hearing explosions in the central city of Yazd, on Qeshm island, and at the port of Bandar Abbas.
Tensions reached a new height on Friday when Iran’s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC) claimed that two oil tankers had exploded after hitting mines in the shipping channel. Centcom explicitly dismissed this report as false, labeling it another inaccurate claim from the IRGC. Furthermore, Washington denied allegations from Tehran that US forces had targeted civilian infrastructure, including bridges, airports, and train stations. However, provincial authorities in Hormozgan reported seven fatalities resulting from the strikes, and verified imagery has confirmed damage to the Gariveh Bridge, which appeared in flames in night footage before showing as a crumbled structure in daylight.
The scope of the regional escalation remains broad. Jordan’s armed forces reported intercepting 10 Iranian missiles fired into their airspace overnight, though they confirmed there were no casualties or damage. Meanwhile, sources informed CBS News that multiple American service members sustained injuries during Iranian attacks on two Jordanian bases over the past week. Additionally, Kuwaiti officials reported that Iranian drone strikes caused injuries to their soldiers and damaged a power plant along with water desalination stations. Iran’s armed forces claimed on Friday to have attacked US military facilities in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Syria, though the US has denied the latter claim.
A White House spokesperson maintained that all US operations have been conducted exclusively against military targets. Friday marks exactly one week since President Donald Trump declared the temporary ceasefire agreement over, signaling a significant breakdown in diplomatic efforts to secure a permanent peace in the region.
