British Prime Minister Andy Burnham stated on Wednesday that there are "strong indications" of Iranian involvement in the suspicious activity that triggered a major security alert at RAF Fairford last weekend. The airbase, located in southwest England, has been utilized by the US military during its ongoing conflict with Iran.
Speaking to the BBC, Burnham confirmed that the government now believes Iran played a role in the incident, which occurred in the early hours of Sunday. He emphasized that the situation remains an "ongoing, complex, and serious police investigation." In a separate interview with Sky News, the Prime Minister noted that officials had been waiting to verify their findings before making the public connection, marking the first official acknowledgment from UK authorities that Iran may be behind the threat.
The security incident began Sunday when three white vans were observed heading toward the base. A local resident reported seeing a group of masked men near the vehicles, which were blocking a road in a neighboring village. Following the report, police arrested five British men on suspicion of terrorism and explosives offenses. While the suspects have since been released on bail, investigators confirmed on Tuesday that no explosives were discovered in the vehicles, though a "quantity of petrol" was recovered during the three-day search involving bomb disposal teams.
Prior to the Prime Minister's comments, US President Donald Trump and Secretary of State Marco Rubio suggested that intelligence services were aware of the suspects and that a foreign state might be involved. Speculation regarding Iran’s potential role had intensified following warnings from Tehran against the use of British military bases by Washington. In response to the allegations, Iran’s embassy in London stated that it "categorically rejects and strongly condemns" the speculation of its involvement.
