UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham has officially attributed a suspected terror plot targeting a British air base to Iran's Revolutionary Guard (IRGC). Addressing Parliament on Monday, the Prime Minister stated that the government assesses it as "highly likely" that the operation was coordinated from within Iran and directed by the IRGC. The announcement follows a significant security incident at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, which occurred in late September and triggered an extensive counter-terrorism investigation. Five individuals have been arrested in connection with the case on suspicion of terrorism offences.
As part of the government's response, London has implemented fresh sanctions against two Iranian men. These measures include asset freezes, a prohibition on entering the UK, and disqualification from managing businesses within Britain. Prime Minister Burnham emphasized that the government intends to utilize its full range of powers to disrupt criminal networks and funding streams associated with these threats. "We will not tolerate these threats on our soil," he stated, confirming that additional sanctions are being prepared to further restrict the capacity of Iran and the IRGC to threaten British security.
In a separate parliamentary address, the Prime Minister detailed Britain's ongoing security commitments regarding regional tensions between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Houthi militia. Following discussions with US President Donald Trump during the UN General Assembly last month, the UK has deployed air defence support and a Voyager aircraft to Saudi Arabia for air-to-air refuelling operations. Burnham confirmed that this support has already completed 14 operational missions, reaffirming Britain's solidarity with Saudi Arabia in the face of attacks on civilian infrastructure, such as those targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. He underscored that these actions reflect the government's dual priority of neutralizing threats linked to Iran while supporting regional partners against escalating confrontations.
