The England and Wales Cricket Board has appointed Stephen Fleming as the new head coach for the men's Test team. In a significant leadership shift, Joe Root will return to the role of full-time Test captain, a position he previously held for a record 64 Tests between 2017 and 2022 before stepping down.
Fleming, 53, brings extensive experience to the role, having recently concluded an 18-year tenure with the Chennai Super Kings, during which he secured five IPL titles. He maintains a strong professional and personal connection with white-ball coach Brendon McCullum, who will continue his duties despite stepping down from the Test position. Fleming is scheduled to arrive in the UK later this summer to begin preparations for the Test tour of South Africa, which commences in December.
For the upcoming three-Test series against Pakistan, starting August 19 at Headingley, Marcus Trescothick will serve as the interim head coach. Fleming expressed his enthusiasm for the appointment, noting that he looks forward to working with both Root and rising talent Harry Brook. He emphasized his desire to support the team’s long-term development while fostering a winning environment.
Root’s return to the captaincy follows a brief stint as a short-term option after Ben Stokes' sudden international retirement. Managing director Rob Key, who oversaw the recruitment process, highlighted the importance of having a leader like Root, who will now operate without the pandemic-related restrictions that defined the end of his previous tenure. Key praised Fleming as a highly respected figure capable of guiding the team toward sustainable, world-class success.
Reflecting on his reappointment, Root described it as a great honor and expressed his motivation to work alongside Fleming, whom he identified as an exceptional leader. "I'm particularly looking forward to working with Joe Root as captain – a generational talent who has achieved so much already. There is still plenty more to come from him, and I'm excited to support him so he can enjoy and thrive in the role in what is a different context to his first stint." The selection process, led by Key, saw Fleming emerge as the top candidate from a shortlist that included Jonathan Trott, Richard Dawson, and Tom Moody, following Andy Flower's decision to rule himself out of consideration.
"I know what it feels like to have the weight of leadership and international cricket take their toll, and when that happened to me, my love for the game was rekindled by going to Notts and winning the County Championship. English cricket gave that to me and it is a privilege to have this chance to give something back."
Stephen Fleming, Joe Root, and Marcus Trescothick will now focus on the upcoming schedule, including the Pakistan tour of England, the England tour of South Africa, and the ICC World Test Championship.
