Search teams in Nepal have recovered eight additional bodies at the base camp of Mount Himlung, increasing the total death toll from a massive avalanche to 15. The discovery was made on Thursday by rescuers who navigated through heavy snow that had blanketed the site following severe weather conditions that began on Sunday.

The recovery mission was spearheaded by the Nepal National Mountain Guide Association. According to the association, the bodies were located inside tents at the base camp area. Officials noted that one individual remains missing, though recovery operations have been temporarily halted due to ongoing hazards in the mountainous terrain. The association stated that further search efforts may resume when conditions improve.

Throughout the week, experienced mountain guides from the association utilized periods of favorable weather to dig through the deep snow. In addition to the recent findings, rescuers had previously located 10 other climbers who were part of the same expedition group. Mount Himlung, a 7,126-meter (23,380-foot) peak located in north-central Nepal, is part of a region that contains eight of the world's 14 tallest mountains, including Mount Everest.

The event is being described as one of the most severe disasters in the history of mountaineering in Nepal. All of the individuals killed or reported missing were Nepali nationals who were preparing the base camp for the arrival of foreign clients for the upcoming Autumn climbing season, which commenced this month. This tragedy follows a period of significant hardship for Nepal, as the country continues to recover from devastating floods in August that resulted in the deaths of over 1,400 people and left nearly 6,000 missing.

Every year hundreds of foreign climbers come to Nepal to attempt climb the highest mountain peaks.
