Chelsea icon John Terry has voiced strong disapproval of Thomas Tuchel following England's defeat to Argentina in the FIFA World Cup semifinal. Speaking on Piers Morgan's Sports Uncensored, Terry claimed the responsibility for the loss lies entirely with the German manager, describing his tactical choices after taking the lead as some of the worst he has ever witnessed. Terry remarked, "It is 100% on him. One of the worst tactical decisions I’ve ever seen from a manager. I thought he was elite, yesterday tells me he is not."
This criticism echoed comments Terry made earlier on BeIN Sports immediately following the match. During that broadcast, he noted that the defeat would be particularly disappointing for England fans, especially given the historical criticism surrounding former head coach Gareth Southgate for his perceived reluctance to make bold decisions in critical tournament moments, such as the EURO final loss to Italy. Terry argued that Tuchel adopted a "real negative attitude" by shifting to a five-at-the-back formation, which he believes invited unnecessary pressure and made it nearly impossible for the team to break out of their defensive half.
England had initially taken the lead early in the second half through Anthony Gordon. However, following the goal, the side dropped deep into a defensive shell for the remainder of the contest, managing only a single shot on target after gaining the advantage. Argentina capitalized on this lack of ambition, maintaining ball control and pushing forward even after leveling the score in the 85th minute. The pressure eventually led to Lautaro Martinez scoring the winning goal in the 94th minute. Although Tuchel attempted to respond by bringing on Marcus Rashford and Ivan Toney for the final five minutes of injury time, the late adjustments proved insufficient to prevent a 2-1 defeat. England is now set to compete in the third-place playoff against France on Saturday, July 18.
