England batter Joe Denly has officially announced his decision to retire from professional cricket at the conclusion of the 2026 season. The 40-year-old, who has enjoyed a long and varied career, expressed his gratitude for the journey in a formal statement, noting that the time has come to step away from the game at the end of the 2026 campaign.
Denly’s international career began with an ODI debut against Ireland in 2009. Over the course of his time representing England, he appeared in 15 Tests, 16 ODIs, and 13 T20Is, with his final international appearance coming in a T20I against Australia in 2020. Reflecting on his time in the national shirt, Denly described it as an honour he would cherish forever, thanking those who helped him realize that dream.
Domestically, Denly has been a stalwart for Kent, representing the club for the vast majority of his career, with the exception of a three-year stint at Middlesex between 2012 and 2014. Throughout his domestic tenure, he has played over 250 first-class matches, accumulating more than 14,000 runs. His record in the shortest format is equally impressive, with over 300 appearances and 7,000 runs. Among his notable achievements, Denly was the first player to score a century and take a hat-trick in the same T20 match, a feat he accomplished against Surrey in 2018. Additionally, he captained Kent to their first One Day Cup title since 1974 in 2022.
Beyond English domestic cricket, Denly has gained significant experience on the global stage, participating in various leagues including the Indian Premier League, Pakistan Super League, Big Bash League, and the International League T20. Kent’s Director of Cricket, Simon Cook, praised Denly as one of the modern greats of the club, highlighting his remarkable longevity and his contributions across all formats. Cook noted that having played alongside Denly and won trophies with him, he holds the veteran's career record in high regard.
