Chelsea have officially secured the services of French defender Maxence Lacroix, completing a £52 million transfer from Crystal Palace. The 26-year-old has committed his future to Stamford Bridge by signing a six-year contract that runs until 2032.
Upon his arrival, the defender described Chelsea as the “best club in the world” following discussions with new manager Xabi Alonso.
Lacroix’s move marks the latest step in a career that has seen him rise through the ranks from his beginnings at French club Sochaux, where he made 28 senior appearances.
He later transitioned to VfL Wolfsburg in 2020, where his consistent defensive displays eventually prompted a £18 million move to Crystal Palace in 2024.
During his time at Selhurst Park, the centre-back solidified his reputation as a top-tier defender, tallying 98 appearances, four goals, and four assists across all competitions for the Eagles.
His tenure at Crystal Palace was highlighted by significant achievements, including a key role in the club’s 2024-25 FA Cup victory. Lacroix started five matches during that cup run, notably featuring in the 1-0 final win over Manchester City.
Additionally, he was a member of the squad that helped Palace secure the Uefa Conference League title last season, during which he made 55 appearances across all competitions.
On the international stage, Lacroix represented France at this summer’s World Cup. He featured in three matches as the French team finished in fourth place following a defeat to England in the third-place play-off.
The signing is part of a busy transfer window for Chelsea, who have already completed a British record £117 million deal for Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
Under the guidance of Xabi Alonso, the club is also reportedly nearing further acquisitions, including Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, as they look to bolster the squad with experienced talent.
