The Joburg Super Kings have officially announced that former South African all-rounder Albie Morkel will serve as the team's head coach for the fifth season of the SA20 tournament. Morkel succeeds Fleming, who held the position for the franchise's first four seasons.
Morkel has been a fixture within the Joburg Super Kings organization since the inaugural SA20 season, having also previously represented the Chennai Super Kings as a player during his IPL career. Rupa Gurunath, the owner of the Super Kings, praised the appointment, noting that Morkel has been an invaluable member of their coaching group. She highlighted his deep understanding of the team's identity, his established relationships with staff and players, and his significant contributions to player development behind the scenes.
KS Viswanathan, the Director of the Joburg Super Kings, expressed confidence in the transition, stating that Morkel’s familiarity with the team's culture—gained through his dual experience as both a player and a coach—makes him the right choice to lead. Viswanathan emphasized that Morkel’s leadership and his grasp of the South African cricket landscape are key assets for the franchise moving forward.
Reflecting on his new appointment, Morkel described the promotion as an incredible honor. He noted the personal significance of his journey, moving from wearing the team's jersey as a player to now leading the franchise as head coach. Morkel expressed his commitment to "building on the strong foundations we’ve created together and helping this group achieve its full potential.”
Earlier this year, Super Kings finished fourth in the league stage, and then lost the Eliminator.
