The Trump administration is pursuing an additional $10 million in taxpayer funds to support Freedom 250, the group tasked with organizing celebrations for the nation’s semiquincentennial. This latest request has prompted scrutiny from lawmakers regarding the management of previous public and private financial contributions.
Sen. Jeff Merkley, D-Oregon, detailed the request in a July 29 letter addressed to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum. According to Merkley, Congress was notified earlier in the month of a broader Trump administration budget proposal that included an unspecified amount to help Freedom 250 recover costs. Subsequent discussions between the senator’s office and the Interior Department clarified that the agency is seeking $10 million to reimburse the National Parks Service for expenses tied to events on the National Mall. These events include the July 4th Salute to America, the Great American State Fair, and the Rededicate 250 prayer event.
In his letter, Merkley argued that Freedom 250 has already utilized more than $100 million in combined taxpayer and private funding. He stated that it is unacceptable to ask the public to bail out the organization after Congress had already provided substantial resources. Under the 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Congress allocated $150 million to the Department of the Interior for the 250th anniversary; $100 million was directed to Freedom 250, while $50 million went to America250, the congressionally created planning group.
Financial transparency remains a point of contention. As a subsidiary of the National Parks Foundation, Freedom 250 is not subject to the same immediate disclosure requirements as standard federal agencies. Public records concerning its private donations and expenditures will not be available until after the fiscal year concludes on Sept. 30. Additionally, the group has faced criticism for spending at least $10 million on mobile history exhibits described by some as having an inaccurate, Christian-focused perspective, and for paying Event Strategies Inc.—the firm that planned President Donald Trump’s Jan. 6, 2021, rally—hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Freedom 250 has also solicited private donations from corporations such as Mastercard, Exxon Mobil, Palantir, and Deloitte, leading to Democratic concerns over potential policy influence. Meanwhile, America250 reported in February that it had only received $25 million of its allocated funds and remains in ongoing discussions with Congress.
Freedom 250 spokesperson Danielle Alvarez defended the request, characterizing the criticism as partisan politics. She claimed that the organization was forced to increase event security due to divisive rhetoric. The group has two upcoming events scheduled: the Patriot Games at Spire Academy in Ohio from Aug. 9-11, and an IndyCar race on the National Mall on Aug. 22-23. As of July 30, the Interior Department has not issued a public response to the funding request.
