The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) are preparing for a significant leadership transition as they head into the 2027 IPL season following the retirement of Ajinkya Rahane from all formats of the game. Rahane served as the franchise captain for the past two seasons, leaving a void that the team must fill either through upcoming auctions, trades, or internal promotion.
Vice-captain Rinku Singh currently emerges as the primary candidate to step into the role. KKR originally appointed Rinku as vice-captain ahead of the 2026 season, a strategic decision intended to foster his development as a leader. At the time, head coach Abhishek Nayar praised Rinku’s evolution, noting that his influence off the field and his growth as a World Cup champion made him the ideal person to support Rahane’s tenure. While Rinku has limited experience at the senior captaincy level, his record is promising; he led the Meerut Mavericks to a UPT20 title in 2024 and a runner-up finish in 2025, winning 13 out of 18 matches. He also serves as the captain for the Uttar Pradesh List A side, a position he assumed ahead of the 2024-25 Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Should the team look elsewhere, 38-year-old Sunil Narine stands out as a highly experienced option. As the highest wicket-taker among overseas bowlers in IPL history and a member of the KKR squad since 2012, Narine is a central figure within the organization. Although he has never captained the Knight Riders, his extensive experience with sister franchises like Trinbago, Abu Dhabi, and Los Angeles Knight Riders offers a strong leadership background. Another potential candidate on the current roster is Rovman Powell, who captained the West Indies in 37 T20I matches between 2022 and 2024.
The franchise faces a critical decision regarding its long-term strategy, as only one season remains in the current three-year IPL cycle covering 2025 to 2027. KKR may decide to appoint a stop-gap captain for the 2027 season before re-evaluating their leadership structure for the next cycle. The team will have opportunities to adjust their squad through the trade window, which remains open until one week before the auction, and again after the auction concludes. The BCCI has yet to confirm the deadline for player retentions, which is typically scheduled for November, with the auction generally taking place in December.
