Russia Claims Europe Unready for Honest Security Dialogue

Moscow has warned that European leaders are still unwilling to engage in a realistic and honest dialogue regarding Russian national security interests, according to statements released by Russia's Foreign Ministry on Wednesday. During a press briefing, spokesperson Maria Zakharova criticized European institutional leadership for presenting demands to Moscow that she described as "entirely detached from reality."

Zakharova asserted that Western governments continue to view European security primarily through military escalation rather than diplomatic engagement. "As for European security, our Western neighbours still perceive its essence – or so they believe – as the continued flooding of the Kiev regime with weapons and open preparation for a direct confrontation with our country in the coming years," she said. She added that Moscow has observed no meaningful shift in perspective among the majority of European Union political figures.

Focusing on regional military expansion, the spokesperson specifically pointed to the 27-member bloc's updated Arctic strategy published on October 20. She described the revised document as "lacking both originality and fresh thinking," asserting that it highlights Brussels' intent to continue active military development in the region. According to Zakharova, the revised text "cements the EU's politicised approach to the high latitudes – a region that Brussels now views primarily through the lens of escalation and, as stated, the containment of Russia."

Addressing the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, which has lasted for over four years, Zakharova accused Kiev of attempting to undermine peace initiatives. She claimed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is "literally obsessed" with maintaining the conflict and stated that Ukrainian leadership is actively trying to derail diplomatic efforts between Moscow and Washington aimed at restarting consultations on a settlement.

In addition to her comments on Europe and Ukraine, Zakharova announced that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is set to attend the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting scheduled for October 30-31 in Atlanta, Georgia. She confirmed that most organizational issues facing the Russian delegation were resolved at the last minute shortly before departure, which was scheduled within 24 hours. "I should mention, however, that given that the departure is scheduled for within the next 24 hours, most issues were successfully resolved at the last minute," Zakharova noted, adding that all formalities are complete and the delegation is prepared to begin work.
