Serbia’s Aleksandar Vučić Concedes Election to Student-Led Movement

Long-standing Serbian leader Aleksandar Vučić has conceded defeat in the nation's snap parliamentary elections, acknowledging that his party lost to a student-led protest movement. Speaking late on Sunday at the headquarters of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Belgrade, the right-wing populist leader stated that although final results were not yet available, it was clear that his party had been defeated.

The snap elections were called by Vučić following two years of widespread protests. These demonstrations were sparked by the 2024 collapse of a train station canopy in the city of Novi Sad, which resulted in 16 deaths. The tragedy became a symbol of systemic corruption and negligence within the country. Preliminary data from Serbia's election commission pointed to a record-high voter turnout, a factor that analysts had previously noted would likely benefit the student-led opposition.

Following the announcement, celebrations erupted throughout the streets of Belgrade. Supporters of the movement were seen dancing and chanting "victory," accompanied by the sound of honking cars and fireworks.
