A young man with disabilities was killed by Israeli forces during a ground incursion into Jamlah village in the western countryside of Daraa province, southern Syria, according to reports from Syrian media on Thursday. State broadcaster Alikhbariah TV reported that Israeli troops entered the village, where they positioned snipers on the rooftops of residential buildings and conducted searches of several homes. The broadcaster further alleged that Israeli forces fired indiscriminately into residential neighbourhoods throughout the operation.
Syria’s official SANA news agency confirmed that Israeli forces shot and killed the civilian, noting that his body was subsequently transported to Daraa National Hospital. This ground operation followed an incident on Wednesday in which Israeli tanks shelled the outskirts of Abidin village, also located in western Daraa.
On Sunday, the Syrian Foreign Ministry issued a formal condemnation regarding the escalation of Israeli incursions into the Daraa countryside and Quneitra province. The ministry also cited an increase in reconnaissance, helicopter, and military flights over the southern region of the country. Officials warned that these ongoing violations undermine regional stability and security, while also obstructing recovery and reconstruction efforts. The ministry called upon the international community to intervene to end these violations and ensure Israel complies with international law and relevant United Nations resolutions.
Israeli military activity in southern Syria has increased significantly since the fall of Bashar al Assad’s regime in December 2024. Following those events, Israel declared the 1974 disengagement agreement void and moved to seize the Syrian buffer zone, leading to repeated incursions into the region.
