The 2026 Forbes list of the 400 wealthiest Americans highlights a significant concentration of wealth, with the combined net worth of those included reaching $8 trillion. The wealth gap among the nation's ultra-rich continues to expand; according to the magazine, 590 American billionaires were unable to secure a spot on the annual ranking.
Data from the report shows that the top 20 individuals on the list now account for 50% of the total wealth, an increase of $970 billion compared to 2025. Despite the minimum net worth required to qualify reaching an unprecedented $4.4 billion, 34 new individuals still managed to enter the rankings.
Elon Musk, the Tesla CEO and former leader of the Department of Government Efficiency, secured the No. 1 position for the fifth consecutive year. Musk became the first individual on the list to surpass the $900 billion mark. He also maintains the top spot on the magazine's global real-time billionaires list. Amazon founder Jeff Bezos followed in second place, trailing Musk by more than $500 billion.
The Forbes 2026 list was compiled using wealth estimates calculated as of September 4. The full list is available to the public on the Forbes website.
From Elon Musk to Mark Zuckerberg, the usual suspects round out the top 10, with the South African-born businessman earning the No. 1 spot for the fifth year in a row.
