An operation to dismantle illegal housing structures in Baghdad turned deadly on Thursday, resulting in the death of an Iraqi army brigadier general and leaving five other individuals wounded. The incident occurred in the southern district of Dora, an area characterized by large agricultural plots where unauthorized construction is frequently reported.
According to an Iraqi security official, the violence erupted as military personnel and municipal workers attempted to clear the structures. The official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity in line with regulations, confirmed that the fatal shooting claimed the life of the brigadier general, while one police officer and four municipal employees sustained injuries. The Baghdad municipality had reportedly initiated the action following the receipt of formal legal orders to remove the illegal buildings.
In the aftermath of the shooting, security forces and police units moved to seal off the area. The Baghdad Operations Commander arrived at the scene to assess the situation and monitor ongoing developments. State media also confirmed the death of the brigadier general and reported that several municipal workers were among the wounded during the confrontation.
