The Jaffna franchise of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) has undergone a major ownership change, with the Stockholm-based global sports group Anchor Sports AB acquiring the team. Former Indian pace bowler Zaheer Khan has joined the franchise as a co-owner, marking a significant expansion for the ownership group. Following the takeover, the team formerly known as the Jaffna Kings has been officially rebranded as the Anchor Jaffna Kings.
Nagendra Siddoutam, the owner of Anchor Sports, is leading the acquisition alongside Zaheer. This move aligns with the group’s broader strategy in global cricket, as Anchor Sports already maintains ownership of the Antwerp Anchors in Belgium’s European T20 Premier League and both the men’s and women’s Vancouver Anchors teams in Canada’s Super 60 League. Currently, the Jaffna franchise holds a position in the top two of the LPL points table.
Anil Mohan, the Chairman and CEO of the tournament rights holder, Innovative Production Group, welcomed the new investors. He noted that Jaffna has been a legendary team throughout the league's six-year history, securing four championship titles and setting a high standard for excellence. Mohan expressed confidence that the new ownership would bring fresh vision and energy to the team while continuing to elevate the standards of the LPL.
Reflecting on his new role, Zaheer Khan expressed his enthusiasm for becoming involved in Sri Lankan cricket. He highlighted his long-standing admiration for the innovation and variety of bowling talent produced by the country, citing fond memories of competing there. Zaheer stated that he is genuinely thrilled to be part of the setup and is eager to begin working with the newly branded team.
