Northern parts of the UK are preparing for the arrival of Storm Boelo, with the Met Office issuing amber weather warnings as the system approaches. The storm is set to bring strong winds and heavy showers, which are expected to intensify throughout Saturday evening. Widespread wind gusts ranging from 60 to 70mph are anticipated across Scotland, with forecasters warning that exposed coastal areas could see gusts reaching up to 80mph.
Amber wind warnings will come into force at 21:00 BST for sections of Scotland, Northern Ireland, and northern England. These alerts indicate an increased risk of travel disruption and a potential threat to life. The amber warning for Scotland is scheduled to remain in place for 24 hours. Additionally, parts of Northern Ireland are under an amber warning from 21:00 on Saturday until 10:00 on Sunday.
The Met Office has advised that these high winds may result in power cuts, flying debris, damage to buildings and trees, and travel disruption. Large waves also pose a danger to life in coastal regions. The strongest winds are expected to impact western Scotland first on Saturday evening before spreading eastwards overnight and through Sunday. The public is urged to stay indoors where possible; if individuals must go out, they are advised to avoid walking or sheltering near trees and buildings to reduce the risk of injury from debris.
In addition to the amber alerts, yellow rain warnings have been issued for the south-west, north-west, and south-east of England, as well as the West Midlands and Wales, effective until 23:00 on Saturday. Yellow wind warnings are also in effect for much of northern England and Scotland until 21:00 on Sunday, while Northern Ireland’s yellow wind warning will persist until midday on Sunday.
This latest weather event follows closely on the heels of Storm Austen, which hit the south-west of England hardest. National Grid reported that while power has been restored to more than 124,000 properties since the start of that storm, hundreds of homes remained without electricity on Saturday evening.
