Typhoon Dolphin moved across Japan's southern remote islands on Friday, forcing the closure of Naha Airport and resulting in the cancellation of all domestic and international flights in and out of Okinawa. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the storm was positioned just north of Okinawa’s main island as of Friday afternoon, packing maximum sustained winds of 144 kph (89 mph).
Local authorities in Okinawa reported that 240 people had sought safety at various evacuation centers across the prefecture by midday Friday. The storm has also caused minor injuries; three men in their 70s were hurt, with two caught in the high winds and a third falling from a stool while attempting to secure his property against the incoming weather.
Residents in parts of Japan’s southern main island of Kyushu are also bracing for the storm’s impact. Many, particularly those whose homes sustained damage during last week’s earthquake, have been covering roofs and walls with blue tarps to mitigate potential water damage from the anticipated heavy rainfall.
The Japan Meteorological Agency has issued warnings for strong winds, heavy rain, and high waves throughout the Okinawa region, advising all residents to remain indoors through Sunday. While the typhoon is expected to weaken over the weekend, it remains on a track toward China’s eastern coast, where it is projected to make landfall by Monday morning.
