A pet goose in Richmond, Texas, has been credited with saving a family's barn after alerting them to a fire that broke out in the middle of the night. The bird, named Goosey, was adopted by the family of Chelsea Gerber on Mother’s Day, May 10, after her daughter insisted on bringing him home from a poultry expo.
The incident occurred on August 3 around 1 a.m. CT. According to Gerber, the family was asleep when the fire started inside the structure. Security footage captured the moment the goose began fluttering and honking repeatedly, creating enough of a commotion to wake the owners. Gerber described the moment as something she will never forget, noting that the bird came charging out and continued to sound the alarm until the family investigated the source of the noise.
Upon reaching the barn, the family was able to extinguish the flames before they could cause widespread destruction. Gerber told Storyful that they were in pure disbelief after reviewing the footage and felt extremely grateful that the situation was resolved before it became truly devastating. While the damage to the barn was minimal and no one was injured, it remains unclear how the fire started or if any other animals were inside the structure at the time. As of August 7, Gerber had not provided further details regarding the cause of the fire.
Reflecting on the event, Gerber emphasized that people often underestimate the intelligence and observational skills of birds. She noted that Goosey was not just making noise but was actively sounding an alarm that made a life-saving difference. She praised her pet, calling him, "Our Hero Has Feathers." Following the incident, Gerber shared a video on TikTok showing the goose preparing for a swim while the rest of the flock remained in their enclosure, highlighting the bird's role in protecting her farm.
