Deniz Kayadelen, a 38-year-old Turkish open-water swimmer, has officially become the first person from Türkiye to swim in the Arctic. The athlete completed a 1,200-metre swim in the freezing waters of Norway's Svalbard archipelago, a region known for being one of the closest inhabited areas to the North Pole. The water temperature during her feat was recorded at 4 C (39.2 F).
Kayadelen, who has previously secured six world championships and holds a Guinness World Record, was accompanied on the journey by her 10-month-old daughter, Alya. Reflecting on the challenge, the swimmer and psychologist noted that balancing motherhood with such an extreme athletic endeavor added a profound layer of meaning to the experience. She stated that her mission has always been to draw inspiration from nature while creating miracles and inspiring others. By swimming in the glacier-fed Arctic waters, she felt she successfully represented her country, stating, "I made history. I flew the Turkish flag. No Turkish person had ever entered these icy waters before. I am proud to be the first."
