US President Donald Trump has declared his “complete and total” support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the nation approaches its parliamentary elections on 27 October. The endorsement was issued via a letter posted on Trump’s Truth Social platform, where he stated, “BIBI NETANYAHU WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!”
Netanyahu responded to the public backing on Sunday through a post on X, expressing gratitude to the US president. “Thank you, President Trump, for your tremendous support and for our work together. Together we will complete the mission!” the Israeli leader wrote. The exchange highlights the strong political alliance between the two figures as Netanyahu fights to secure another term in office.
While the endorsement provides significant political momentum for the prime minister’s campaign, Trump’s statement did not outline any specific policy commitments. The electoral contest occurs during a period of intense international scrutiny regarding Israel’s military campaign in Gaza. In November 2024, the International Criminal Court (ICC) issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, citing reasonable grounds to believe he bears criminal responsibility for war crimes and crimes against humanity. These charges include the use of starvation as a method of warfare, as well as murder, persecution, and other inhumane acts.
Trump’s public intervention brings his support for the Israeli leader to the forefront as Netanyahu navigates both his domestic re-election effort and the ongoing legal challenges related to the conduct of the war.
