Stephen Fleming has officially stepped down as the head coach of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK). The decision follows a mutual agreement between the coach and the franchise, concluding one of the most successful and enduring partnerships in the history of the Indian Premier League. The departure was finalized following a series of open and honest discussions between Fleming and the Super Kings management.
Beyond his role with the IPL franchise, Fleming has also ended his ties with the organization's other teams, including the Joburg Super Kings in the SA20 and the Texas Super Kings in Major League Cricket. The announcement arrived shortly after the Texas Super Kings finished in last place for the 2026 MLC season, while the Joburg Super Kings have failed to reach a SA20 final in four seasons. Speculation regarding Fleming's future had been mounting following a difficult run for the Chennai franchise, which finished eighth in the 2026 IPL season after a last-place finish in 2025. When questioned about his future after the final league game this year, Fleming noted that the decision rested with the management.
Reflecting on his departure, Fleming stated that after eighteen years, he leaves with nothing but gratitude. He described his time with the franchise as the privilege of his coaching career, highlighting the unforgettable victories and the bonds built over the years. Fleming joined the team as a player in 2008 before transitioning to head coach the following season. Working closely with MS Dhoni, he guided the team to the playoffs 12 times and reached the final on 10 occasions. Under his tenure, the team secured IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021, and 2023, along with Champions League T20 titles in 2010 and 2014.
CSK owner Rupa Gurunath praised Fleming for being the heartbeat of the coaching unit, noting that he helped shape the team's identity and vision for nearly two decades. CEO KS Viswanathan also lauded his ability to foster a culture of consistency and humility, emphasizing that his influence extended far beyond the boundary. While his on-field tenure has concluded, the franchise noted he remains an integral part of the team's legacy. At this time, no announcements have been made regarding the future of other support staff, such as batting coach Mike Hussey or bowling coach Eric Simons.
