Spain has officially shattered Italy’s long-standing record of 37 consecutive unbeaten matches, extending their own run to 38 games. The milestone was reached following an intense encounter at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium, where Ferran Torres scored during extra time to secure a victory against a 10-man Argentina side.
This new mark eclipses the previous record set by Roberto Mancini’s Italy team between 2018 and 2021. While the unbeaten streak record has changed hands, the outcome of the match provided some relief for the Azzurri, as Argentina’s defeat ensured that certain historic World Cup achievements for Italy remain intact.
Italy and Germany continue to hold the distinction of being the only teams to have won the World Cup four times, trailing only Brazil, who have secured the title five times. Argentina remains on three titles following the result. Furthermore, Italy maintains its status as one of the few nations to have won consecutive World Cup tournaments, having achieved the feat in 1934 and 1938. Brazil is the only other country to have accomplished back-to-back victories, doing so in 1958 and 1962.
Whatever the result this evening in New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium would mean bad news for the Nazionale and its history books.
That record is gone, but Argentina had the opportunity to ruin perhaps two more important tallies for the Nazionale.
