Southern Brave Women began their The Hundred campaign with a hard-fought eight-run victory against Welsh Fire Women, successfully defending a target of 126. Despite a strong chase led by Georgia Voll, the Brave bowlers struck at crucial moments to restrict the hosts to 118 for 8 from their 100 balls.
Sent in to bat, the Brave innings saw an early contribution from Lizelle Lee, who scored 31 off 26 balls. However, Heather Graham caused significant damage for the Fire, finishing with figures of 4 for 19 by removing both Lee and Maia Bouchier. Laura Wolvaardt anchored the innings with a composed unbeaten 45, receiving support from Sophie Molineux, who added a brisk 22 off 16 deliveries. Despite further breakthroughs from Graham, who also dismissed Molineux and Sarah Glenn, Wolvaardt remained at the crease to help her side reach 126 for 7.
The Welsh Fire chase started poorly when Sophie Molineux bowled Ella McCaughan within the first 10 balls. Momentum shifted in favor of the hosts through a 75-run partnership between Voll and Freya Kemp, which left the Fire well-positioned at 80 for 1 after 58 balls. Voll displayed excellent timing in her 39-ball half-century, while Kemp contributed 39 runs from 29 deliveries.
The match turned decisively when Jemimah Rodrigues executed a direct hit to run out Kemp, triggering a dramatic collapse. Molineux struck eight balls later to remove Sophie Devine. Although the Fire appeared to be in control needing only 23 runs from the final 20 balls, the innings unraveled rapidly. Tilly Corteen-Coleman dismissed the set batter Voll, while Lauren Bell followed up by claiming the wickets of Georgia Wareham and Em Arlott in just three balls. Molineux returned to account for Niamh Holland, leaving the Fire having lost five wickets for just six runs in a 13-ball span. Requiring 13 from the final five deliveries, the Fire ultimately fell short as Corteen-Coleman bowled Graham to seal the win. Molineux led the attack with 3 for 14, supported by Bell’s 3 for 16 and Corteen-Coleman’s 2 for 22.
