Shimron Hetmyer has been drafted into the West Indies squad for the second and third ODIs against New Zealand, filling the vacancy left by the injured Justin Greaves. Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed that Greaves has returned to Barbados to focus on his rehabilitation after suffering a back injury that sidelined him for the series opener in Providence.
Hetmyer, who last featured in an ODI in June 2025, was initially omitted from the squad for the first three matches of the series to allow him to complete his commitments in the MLC with the Seattle Orcas. Following the Orcas' failure to qualify for the knockout stages after finishing fifth in the league, Hetmyer became available for international selection. During his time in the MLC this year, he recorded 164 runs across ten appearances with a strike rate of 136.66.
Regarding the status of Greaves, CWI noted that the player will undergo further assessment ahead of the final two matches of the ODI series and the subsequent two-match Test series against Pakistan. Greaves was recently recognized as the player of the series against Sri Lanka, where his 180-run performance in a high-scoring draw helped secure the West Indies' first Test series win since 2023.
While the squad for the final two ODIs is expected to be announced later this week, the West Indies currently hold a series advantage following a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first ODI. The initial three matches of the series are being hosted in Providence, with the concluding two games scheduled for Bridgetown.
