Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan has engaged in discussions with his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi, to address escalating security developments across the region and explore diplomatic avenues to contain the current crisis. The Saudi Foreign Ministry confirmed the talks in a statement released on the X platform, noting that the telephone conversation was initiated by Araghchi.
According to the ministry, the two officials reviewed the recent regional escalation and the efforts currently being made to manage the situation. However, officials did not provide specific details regarding any diplomatic proposals or concrete measures agreed upon during the high-level exchange.
This diplomatic dialogue occurs against a backdrop of intensifying military confrontation in the region. Recent weeks have been marked by repeated cross-border strikes against Saudi civilian infrastructure and significant disruptions to international navigation through the Strait of Hormuz. On Saturday, a fatal strike targeting King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh resulted in the deaths of 13 people and left hundreds injured. Following the attack, Yemeni government forces blamed the Houthi militia and pledged a decisive military response.
Maritime transit remains under pressure as well, with commercial traffic through the Strait of Hormuz facing ongoing disruptions. These constraints follow navigation restrictions imposed by Tehran in April 2026, which were implemented in the wake of the war that broke out between the United States, Israel, and Iran in February of that year.
