Polish police confirmed on Sunday that they have received intelligence regarding a potential plot to attack Prime Minister Donald Tusk and the country’s defence minister, Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz. The information, which was initially received by the state protection service before being relayed to police, has prompted an immediate and serious response from national security agencies.
Jacek Dobrzyński, a spokesperson for the minister overseeing Poland’s intelligence services, stated that the government is treating the matter with extreme seriousness. Following an emergency meeting on Sunday involving officials from the interior ministry, police, and various security services, authorities concluded that there was a high probability the threats could have been carried out. Adam Szłapka, a spokesperson for the Polish government, confirmed that Prime Minister Tusk was made aware of the "exceptionally concerning" threat early Sunday morning.
This security alert comes as Poland remains on high alert following a series of violent incidents, including three separate school stabbings in the Mazovia province that occurred within a four-day period this week. Those attacks resulted in one death and multiple injuries, including to children. Beyond domestic security concerns, officials are also monitoring the risk of Russian hybrid attacks aimed at weakening Western support for Ukraine. Prime Minister Tusk warned last month that Russia might intensify efforts to destabilize Nato’s eastern flank through drone or rocket strikes on countries that support Ukraine, including Poland. While Moscow has denied any such plans, Dobrzyński noted that Polish security services are currently managing an increasing volume of various threats every month.
