The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has rebranded its premier domestic one-day tournament as the Champions Cup. This new competition is part of a strategic effort to prepare the country's top cricketing talent for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Scheduled to take place from August 11 to 18, the tournament will be hosted entirely at the Multan Cricket Stadium.
The event features four teams: Pakistan Gold, Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, and Pakistan Blues. These squads will be led by captains Shaheen Shah Afridi, Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub, and Sahibzada Farhan, respectively. The tournament structure consists of a single round-robin phase followed by a final, with a total of seven matches scheduled.
Aqib Javed, the PCB's director of high performance, stated that the competition was arranged to provide the best available pool of players with essential playing opportunities. He noted that team selections were made based on specific roles within the 50-over format, expressing anticipation for competitive contests in Multan.
Participation in the tournament is limited for some cricketers due to concurrent commitments. Several international players are unavailable as they are preparing for a three-Test series in England. Additionally, mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed is excluded from the competition as he is currently participating in The Hundred with Sunrisers Leeds.
This initiative follows a previous iteration of the competition in 2024, which featured five mentors and mandatory participation for domestic players. While the current Champions Cup is smaller in scale, it remains a focal point for the board's development goals. Following the 2024 event, the competition was not held under that specific branding the next year, with the board opting for a more low-key white-ball tournament instead.
