Actor Patrick Stewart, who achieved global fame for his commanding performances in television and film, has died at the age of 86. His passing occurred in Los Angeles on Wednesday. According to his spokesperson, Kelly Bush Novak, the actor died following what she described as "a brief and poignant journey" with Alzheimer's disease and Lewy body dementia.

Stewart was best known to international audiences for two definitive roles: Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the "Star Trek: The Next Generation" series and its associated films, and Professor Charles Xavier in the "X-Men" movie franchise. While these roles cemented his status as a screen icon, Stewart maintained a deep and extensive commitment to the stage throughout his career.

His theatrical resume was broad, featuring classical roles ranging from Claudius to Macbeth. Beyond his Shakespearean work, he was well-regarded for his frequent performances of a one-man adaptation of "A Christmas Carol." He also shared a close professional and personal bond with actor Ian McKellen, with whom he appeared in acclaimed West End and Broadway productions of Harold Pinter's "No Man's Land" and Samuel Beckett's "Waiting for Godot."
