Pakistani security forces conducted a series of raids against militant hideouts in the nation’s northwest, resulting in the deaths of 24 members of the outlawed Pakistani Taliban and Baloch separatist groups. The military reported that these operations, which also led to the seizure of a significant cache of weapons, were carried out on Thursday using intelligence-led targeting.
The military action served as a direct response to two militant attacks that occurred on Wednesday. One incident involved a suicide bomber who utilized an explosives-laden vehicle to strike civilians and police officers. Additionally, a separate group of militants targeted a police station in Bannu, a district located in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province near the Afghan border, leaving several officers wounded.
President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the security forces on Friday, characterizing the operations as a swift and effective measure against those responsible for the violence in Bannu. In separate statements, both leaders emphasized that eradicating terrorism remains the government's highest priority and pledged to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.
While the Pakistani Taliban, known as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan or TTP, are distinct from the Afghan Taliban government, Islamabad frequently accuses the Kabul administration of ignoring cross-border militant activity. The Afghan government has consistently denied these claims, despite frequent responsibility claims by the TTP and the Baloch separatist group BLA for attacks within Pakistan. Furthermore, the Pakistani government alleges that these militant groups receive support from India, a claim that the Indian government in New Delhi denies. Both the president and prime minister reiterated these allegations in their Friday statements.
Since last year, Pakistan has conducted multiple strikes targeting TTP hideouts along the Afghan border. The military confirmed that security forces will continue the nationwide counterterrorism campaign known as Azm-e-Istehkam, or "Resolve for Stability," which was established under the National Action Plan to dismantle militant networks throughout the country.
