Pakistan Launches Fuel Subsidy Program for Nine Million Citizens

The Pakistani government has initiated a new subsidy program aimed at supporting more than nine million low-income citizens as the ongoing war between the United States and Iran continues to drive up global energy prices. Officials confirmed the rollout on Tuesday, noting that the initiative is intended to alleviate the severe economic strain on households struggling with rising costs.

Information Technology Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja emphasized that the government has prioritized a seamless and agile delivery process for the aid. She described the effort as the nation’s first nationwide implementation of technology specifically designed to distribute targeted fuel subsidies to eligible citizens. According to the government, the subsidies are structured to assist low-income motorists by allowing them to purchase gasoline at prices closer to prewar levels.

The announcement follows significant domestic pressure, including threats from the Islamist political party Jamaat-e-Islami to stage a march on Islamabad to demand tax cuts on petrol and diesel. The cash-strapped nation has faced a surge in fuel costs, with petrol and diesel prices rising by more than 50% since the conflict began earlier this year. This inflationary trend has impacted transportation, food, and general living costs, fueling concerns regarding potential anti-government demonstrations.

While residents like Islamabad local Amir Shahzad acknowledged that the subsidy provides necessary relief for daily commutes, he noted that it does not cover long-distance travel, where he must still pay prevailing market rates. Meanwhile, the government continues to navigate complex fiscal challenges as it relies on loans from the International Monetary Fund, which has urged the administration to reduce subsidies on essential items such as wheat.
