The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in Stockholm is set to announce the recipient of the Nobel Prize in physics on Tuesday. This announcement follows the start of this year's Nobel prize week, which began on Monday with the awarding of the Nobel Prize in medicine to three scientists. Their work resulted in a tool that utilizes light to help unravel the complexities of how the brain functions.
The Nobel awards schedule continues throughout the week. Following the physics announcement on Tuesday, the chemistry prize will be revealed on Wednesday, and the literature prize is set for Thursday. The peace prize will be awarded on Friday, and the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences is scheduled to be announced on Oct. 12.
For this year, the prize money is set at 12 million Swedish kronor, which is approximately $1.2 million. This amount remains the same whether the prize is awarded to a single individual, a small group of laureates, or an organization.
Last year, the Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to three scientists for their research into the behavior of subatomic particles known as quantum tunneling. That research enabled the ultra-sensitive measurements achieved by MRI machines and provided the foundation for faster computers and improved cellphones.
