Northamptonshire secured their third T20 Blast title in a dramatic finish at Edgbaston, defeating Hampshire by 14 runs. The victory, which comes 10 years after their last title, was defined by collective resilience despite a late batting collapse. Northamptonshire posted a total of 169, fueled by a career-best 88 off 59 balls from Ricardo Vasconcelos, before their bowlers restricted Hampshire to 155.
The match was marked by historic individual performances that ultimately fell short for Hampshire. Sonny Baker became the first bowler to take five wickets in a T20 Finals Day match, finishing with 5-21. His efforts were instrumental in a late Northamptonshire collapse where they lost their final eight wickets for just 31 runs. Joe Weatherley also made history by becoming the first man to score fifties in both the semi-final and the final, ending with 75 in the championship match. Despite these efforts, Northamptonshire’s bowling attack, led by David Willey, proved decisive.
Willey set the tone immediately by dismissing Toby Albert on the first ball of the innings. While James Vince and Joe Weatherley attempted to stabilize the chase, Northamptonshire consistently claimed wickets at critical moments. A key turning point arrived when Luke Procter ran out Liam Dawson, who had been scoring at a rapid pace during a 48-run partnership with Weatherley. Procter further solidified the win by taking two wickets in the 19th over, leaving Hampshire needing 15 runs from the final six balls. The victory was confirmed when Weatherley hit the first ball of the final over to long-on, where Willey secured the catch.
Earlier in the day, Northamptonshire’s batting was anchored by Vasconcelos, who hit 88 before falling to an 88mph yorker from Baker. Nathan McSweeney contributed 30 off 16 balls, and Lewis McManus added valuable runs in a 69-run stand with Vasconcelos. However, Baker’s late-innings spell, which included the dismissals of Louis Kimber and James Sales, kept Hampshire in the contest until the very end. For Hampshire, the defeat marked their second consecutive loss in the final, despite Weatherley surpassing the record for most runs in a single Finals Day with 125 total runs.
