Despite sustaining an early blow to the helmet from a delivery by Charlie Bennett, Fernandes persevered to score 112 from 130 balls. He anchored the Middlesex innings, sharing a vital century partnership with Luke Hollman as the team posted a total of 294 for eight.
Essex stand-in captain Matt Critchley, leading the side while Tom Westley was on paternity leave, won the toss and elected to field. The decision initially paid off as Jamie Porter bowled a disciplined opening spell, finishing with one for 28 and claiming the wicket of Josh de Caires. Middlesex struggled for momentum early on, enduring nearly 10 overs without a boundary and losing Sam Robson to Zaman Akhter. Ben Geddes provided a brief spark with 36 off 39 balls, including two sixes, before falling to Bennett. Once settled, Fernandes accelerated the scoring, and Zafar Gohar added a late flourish with an unbeaten 22 off 13 balls, featuring three sixes, to push the total near 300. In response, Essex reached 253 all out, falling short with 22 balls remaining. Robin Das and Noah Thain started aggressively, but the innings faltered after a 57-run opening stand. Noah Cornwell dismissed Das, and Toby Roland-Jones struck twice in four balls, including the removal of Critchley, leaving Essex at 92 for four. Simon Fernandes provided resistance with a career-best 51 off 65 balls, and Thain contributed 74 from 93, but the pair could not sustain the chase against the Middlesex spinners. Hollman claimed three for 51, while Roland-Jones, Naavya Sharma, and Cornwell each took two wickets. Debutant Ali Zeb remained unbeaten on 34, but Sharma dismissed the final two batters in consecutive deliveries to seal the win.
