A violent incident in the West End neighborhood of Billings, Montana, has resulted in the deaths of multiple adults and children, according to local authorities. The event, which police described as a family disturbance, took place on Sunday evening at a residence on White Star Circle.
Interim Yellowstone County Sheriff Kent O’Donnell confirmed that law enforcement officers were dispatched to the scene following a 911 call reporting gunfire. Upon arriving approximately 10 minutes later, officers reported hearing shots fired from the back of the home. Within three minutes of their arrival, the residence was fully engulfed in flames.
The suspected gunman died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after setting the house on fire, according to reports. While authorities have identified the victims, they have not yet disclosed their names, exact ages, or the final count of those killed. Sheriff O’Donnell noted that the recovery of evidence and the investigation of the crime scene are being hindered by both the fire itself and the water used by fire crews to suppress the blaze.
Billings Fire Chief Matt Hoppel explained that firefighters faced significant challenges due to limited water access and a lack of available hydrants in the immediate vicinity. These conditions contributed to the worsening of the fire, ultimately resulting in the residents being consumed by the flames. Police Sergeant Jeff Stovall stated that some details regarding the case are currently being withheld to preserve the integrity of the ongoing investigation.
