Morgan Rogers has officially joined Chelsea, setting a new record as the most expensive British player ever. The 23-year-old forward secured the move for a £117 million fee, surpassing the £116 million Manchester City previously spent to acquire Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest earlier this summer. Chelsea initiated the announcement on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. with a cryptic video featuring a radio broadcast from "Cobham FM," which alluded to the "ice cold" celebration Rogers shares with his new teammate, Cole Palmer.
The England international arrives at Stamford Bridge following a highly productive season, where he contributed 10 goals and six assists in the league, alongside three goals and five assists during Aston Villa's successful Europa League campaign. Rogers will now play under the management of Xabi Alonso, becoming the coach's second major signing following the arrival of Italian wing-back Marco Pelastra from Atalanta.
Reflecting on his transfer, Rogers expressed his admiration for the club, stating, "For me, Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I've always admired since I was a kid. While he did not score, he played a pivotal role in the quarter-final against Norway in Miami, Florida, where his long-range strike forced a save from Orjen Nyland, leading to a goal by Jude Bellingham in extra time. He also started on the right wing during England's semi-final defeat against Argentina.
