Moises Henriques, the most capped player in the history of the Big Bash League (BBL) and a stalwart of Australian domestic cricket, has officially announced his retirement from the Sydney Sixers and New South Wales. Despite stepping away from the domestic circuit, the 39-year-old intends to continue his playing career by representing his country of birth, Portugal, in upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Henriques, who retired from first-class cricket in March 2025, made his final domestic appearances for New South Wales in List A cricket last summer and led the Sixers to the BBL final in January. Though he received interest from other BBL clubs, he opted to end his career as a one-club player for the Sixers rather than move elsewhere. His storied career saw him play in all 15 seasons of the BBL, appearing in finals during both his first and last campaigns.
Across all formats in Australia, Henriques holds the record for most appearances with 420 matches, including 110 first-class games for New South Wales and 112 List A matches. His international career for Australia featured four Tests, 16 ODIs, and 24 T20Is, with his last appearance coming in 2021. Reflecting on his 22-year professional journey, Henriques expressed gratitude for the relationships he built, noting that it felt like the right time to move on to the next chapter of his life.
Tributes have poured in from across the sport. Rachael Haynes, the general manager of the Sydney Sixers, described him as one of the most influential figures in the team's history, noting that he finishes his tenure as the club's leading run-scorer. Cricket NSW chair John Knox highlighted Henriques' extraordinary longevity, citing his 14 major trophies, over 13,000 runs, and 200 wickets as a testament to his impact. Knox also confirmed that Henriques will continue his involvement with the organization as a Cricket NSW Foundation Director. BBL general manager Alistair Dobson echoed these sentiments, labeling Henriques a three-time champion and one of the most decorated players in the history of the competition.
