After a distinguished 22-year professional career, Moises Henriques has announced his retirement from New South Wales and the Sydney Sixers. The 39-year-old, who stands as Australia's most-capped domestic cricketer with 420 appearances across various formats, decided to conclude his tenure after not being offered a contract for BBL16. Despite receiving interest from other Big Bash clubs, Henriques stated that he felt it was the right time to move on.
Reflecting on his decision, Henriques remarked that he had deliberated on his future after undergoing back surgery in February. He noted that while he had options to continue elsewhere, it did not feel right to leave his long-term home. During his final season, he led the Sydney Sixers to the BBL 15 final and participated in five matches during New South Wales' successful One-Day Cup campaign. He expressed gratitude for his career, stating that the relationships he built over the past two decades were central to his longevity in the sport.
Henriques leaves a significant legacy in the Big Bash League, where he remains the highest-capped player with 154 games and the Sydney Sixers' leading run-scorer with 3,410 runs. A three-time Big Bash champion, he also represented Australia internationally between 2009 and 2021, featuring in four Tests, 16 ODIs, and 24 T20Is.
While his domestic career in Australia has ended, Henriques will continue his involvement in the sport as a director of the Cricket NSW Foundation and remains available for overseas leagues. Additionally, he is set to represent Portugal, his country of birth, in the upcoming European qualifier for the 2028 Men's T20 World Cup.
