Paolo Maldini, the technical director for Italy, has identified former midfielder Andrea Pirlo as his primary candidate to take over as the next coach of the Azzurri. According to reports, Maldini and his advisor, Leonardo, have settled on the former Milan star as the ideal choice to lead the national team through the 2026 cycle.
While the technical decision rests with Maldini, the appointment requires formal approval from FIGC President Giovanni Malagò. It is expected that Malagò will meet with Pirlo in the near future to evaluate his vision and ideas for the squad, with a meeting potentially occurring as soon as today.
Pirlo, who currently serves as the manager of United FC in the UAE Pro League, emerged as the frontrunner for the position last week. His candidacy follows months of speculation surrounding other high-profile names, including Antonio Conte and Roberto Mancini. Although both Conte and Mancini remain in contention for the role—with Mancini reportedly held in high regard by Malagò—the decision-making process is being driven by the preferences of the technical director.
