Lockheed Martin has officially unveiled the PAC-3 Edge, a next-generation missile interceptor specifically engineered to defend against hypersonic and other advanced aerial threats. This development comes as the US military seeks to bolster its defensive capabilities in response to emerging global security challenges.

The current geopolitical climate, marked by ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East, has placed significant strain on existing US weapons stockpiles. To address these demands, the US Army awarded Lockheed Martin a contract valued at up to $58.6 billion in July, aimed at accelerating the production of PAC-3 interceptors.

According to Lockheed Martin, the PAC-3 Edge incorporates several technological upgrades, including a new seeker, improved flight controls, and a multi-pulse rocket motor provided by Northrop Grumman. These enhancements are designed to allow the interceptor to engage advanced threats at higher altitudes and longer ranges than previous iterations.

Tim Cahill, president of missiles and fire control at Lockheed Martin, stated that the new system leverages the combat-proven PAC-3 MSE to provide superior maneuverability, power, and velocity, ensuring the US Army maintains an advanced layered defensive architecture. Cahill noted that the cost of the PAC-3 Edge is expected to be comparable to the existing PAC-3 MSE, with production rates projected to reach 2,000 units annually once at full capacity.

This initiative follows a seven-year framework agreement signed in January between Lockheed Martin and the US Department of Defense, which aims to increase annual manufacturing capacity from approximately 600 units to 2,000. Lockheed Martin plans to continue developing the PAC-3 Edge, with testing scheduled to begin in 2027 to ensure the system is ready for rapid deployment by 2031.
